5 frames in Chợ Bình Tây
Since I live in Viet Nam, I discovered a passion for street photography. I fell in love with those bustling streets, alleys. Wherever you look at, there is something happening, something moving. I think, everybody has its go-to location to shoot. When I lack of inspiration for new places to go, I always head to the same direction: Chợ Bình Tây.
I had a friend visiting for few days and I wanted to show her some places I love in this city. At the same time, I had to test a camera for a friend: a Nikomat Ftn. It came with a Nikkor 28mm F/2 lens but no battery for the lightmeter: for the first I would have to meter the light with my eyes. My friend and I headed to the market around 6:30 a.m., the camera was loaded with a roll of Ilford Hp5+. Luckily for us, the light was amazing and the absence of cloud made it even more beautiful.
Chợ Bình Tây is, for me, one of the best shooting location in Chợ Lớn and probably in Sài Gòn ! Since its recent re-opening, the life is back into the market. It is full of color and really huge (there are more than 600 stalls). I could definitely spend entire days there to shoot the daily life of the sellers.
Nevertheless, what I love to shoot the most is not the market itself, it’s all the surrounding area. You can go there and spend 1-2 hours walking around, however, I would recommend you to go there pretty early. I usually go there around 6:00 a.m., at that time of the day you’ll feel like inside a beehive, surrounded by early shoppers, sellers and traders. The temperature is also cooler at that time of the day, and the sunrise over the market is truly stunning.
